Washinkai Spain Spring Gasshuku 2018

On Thursday 17th May 2018, the Spring Gasshuku in Javea, Costa Blanca, commenced at the Institute of Sport. Mike O’Brien, former Treasure of the EKF, was a guest, along with Andrew Newman, 5th Dan, a Washinkai member from England. The training session was vigorous and whilst this was taking place, Sensei Geovanny Sanchez Salazar, 4th Dan, the main instructor of the Washinkai Javea Club, was busy assisting students who were competing at the Championships on the following Saturday.

On Friday 18th May, two sessions were held, one early in the day and the second in the evening. At the end of the evening session Dan Gradings took place and two candidates going for Nidan were successful: Alistair Morton and Karen Cobo.  Over the last several years, Geovanny has organised competitions with various towns in the Valencia region, with karate clubs of various styles. His whole approach is about hospitality and communication and he has been very successful in holding these competitions, each town taking its turn to host. The Competition organised for the 20th May was called the Peter Ford Memorial Trophy in memory of Peter Ford who had retired to Javea and taken up karate with Sensei Geovanny Sanchez Salazar. He was tragically killed after a road traffic accident. Peter loved his karate and trained on a daily basis with Sensei Geovanny Sanchez Salazar.  A large trophy was designed for his memory and the overall winner of the competition would have their name engraved on it and retain a replica.  At the end of the competition, a Washinkai student, Lukas Muniz, 2nd Dan, was the overall winner. The trophy was presented to Peter Ford’s wife, Annie, along with a posthumous Shodan (1st Dan) Certificate in Peter’s name.

A fabulous dinner was held on the last evening at La Masena, a five star restaurant, where the first class chef is also a Washinkai Dan Grade.  Altogether it was a superb weekend, culminating with the championships and as usual, everyone who travels from the UK, wanted to know the date for next year’s course.
