I started karate a long time ago, when I was about 24 years old. Training in Washinkai Karate with Shihan Chris Thompson at his club in Mitcham, I achieved 5th kyu, but unfortunately, life took over (moving away, kids, family came along) and I had to leave.
I did go to a couple of other clubs, but found their teachings were never up to the high standard of Shihan Thompson. Eventually, at the ripe old age of 50, I moved back to Mitcham and decided to see if the club was still there. Now run by Sensei Annette Turpin, I returned and after nine years further training I achieved 1st Dan. I am now training for 2nd Dan and am so glad I returned to karate! It gives you confidence and at every grading taken, gives you a greater sense of achievement.
