I started training in 1986, joining the Washinkai Dojo based at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, south west London. I had recently moved to London to train as a Psychiatric Nurse at St George’s, some friends were going to a beginners class at the Dojo and I tagged along… from the first session I was ‘hooked’.
Shortly afterwards I began training with Shihan Thompson at the principal Washinkai Dojo, Canons in Mitcham, and later, also at the Judokan in Hammersmith.
When I joined the Canons Dojo there were 60 – 70 Karateka training in the adult sessions twice weekly, children trained separately an hour beforehand. While I had always participated in sports this was my first encounter with Martial Arts and training alongside many senior Dan grades was daunting but inspiring.
I achieved Shodan in 1993.
I was a member of the Washinkai National squad for several years competing in individual and team events at Washinkai, EKGB, BKF, VSO and regional championships.
I have been fortunate to travel and train abroad with the Washinkai organisation to Japan, Okinawa, Hong Kong and Spain.
I am a member of the Washinkai team of Referees & Judges and officiate at Washinkai competitions and the Armed Services championships.
I currently teach at the Canons Dojo and at the Norwood Dojo.
